UNIVERSAL QUANTIFICATION (2016)

A POP-UP EXHIBITION PRESENTED AT THE MUSEUM OF FUTURES, LONDON (UK)

 

We are used to imagine the future as a collection of possibilities, an open space where all the potential futures-to-come are ready and steady to become real. We are also familiar with defining a Museum as a place where to collect and display the works from the past in dialogue with our present and our future.

 

What we are exploring with universal quantification (∀) is the possibility of finding, in a conventional and pre-determined space (the Museum of Futures, but also Surbiton, one of the residential areas of South West London), the lowest common denominator of our joint futures, the base where we recognize our common destiny and the basic unit of our community: the individual and collective body.

 

A universal quantification is a sign that indicates the case when a proposition can be satisfied by every member of a domain of discourse. It is represented by the inverted capital A which can be interpreted as ‘given any’ or ‘for all’.

 

All the artists invited by futuremellon/not yet art to collaborate for this exhibition have made a short stop to Surbiton during their passage in UK or are currently living and working here. Artists with diverse cultural origins, professional backgrounds and points of view have been commissioned to create or perform their personal understanding of the notion of future. Their artistic propositions – seeds and yeast for our futures – will premiere, be documented and collected at the Museum of Futures. The actions of those artists are bridges to a shared forthcoming; a way to reflect and question our innate need for community challenging the potential of every possible movement that will bring us further in time and space.
